Creating COVID Campaigns II
Creating COVID Campaigns is about designers and non-designers collectively creating pro-public-health campaigns that the government won’t, organized by the Saskatoon group Take Action Against COVID.
The Saskatchewan government, like many in North America, is pretending that the COVID pandemic is over. Not only have they have removed public health measures, they have removed much of our ability to “manage our own risk” as they touted that we should do. There is little fanfare or encouragement to get vaccines when they are available, particularly for kids. School boards cannot even set their own masking policies. They now infrequently report COVID statistics, in a way that hides death and disability. This “mandatory infection” policy has left our public healthcare system under severe strain with medical staff sick, burnt out and departing.
In the midst of this, public service announcements regarding COVID are nonexistent. There are no campaigns to let us know that COVID is still a real threat, that people should take every precaution to make sure that they don’t get sick or transmit the virus, and that Long COVID will be a disabling event for thousands in our province in the near term future. And there is almost total silence in the media.
We are on the cusp of another wave of mass infection, as kids and grownups have returned to school with no mandatory COVID protections.
It’s time to end the normalizing of a high plateau of COVID death and injury, because Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan government just want to “move on.”
Let’s work together to create some clever and visual campaigns and put public service announcements out there, reminding people of their power to protect themselves and others.
Here are two campaigns we came up with in the pilot version of this event. They link to campaign pages on our website where you can download printable posters of them for schools, workplaces, and communities.
How it works
In our Facebook event, between Sept 23rd and 30th, use the Event Discussion tab in the event to contribute ideas, text, graphics, visual art. Admins with Take Action Against COVID can help evolve good ideas into refined campaigns.
There are, when you boil it down, two kinds of “PSAs” (public service announcements). One kind is politically critical, that talks about where the blame lies, how incompetent the government is at handling the pandemic, and so on. There is definitely a need for these kinds of campaigns as well. Both kinds are encouraged here too.
If you know of COVID campaigns, particularly ones that might inspire people and generate ideas, please also post them in the discussion.
We have a few social media channels we can distribute these campaigns through as well as an advertising budget. We’d like to credit these collectively created campaigns “Take Action Against COVID,” and (as appropriate), somewhere in the text, point people to our website’s campaigns and resources pages (and/or other critical and usable online resources about COVID as well).
We have the ability to distribute these online, but we have the ability to make posters of artwork as well.
Are you ready? The government may ignore COVID, but let’s make sure that the people of Saskatchewan— and in other locales where governments are eager to pretend COVID isn’t real— don’t go sleepwalking after them.
