Our Board Members
We’re fortunate to have a strong team of board members who work hard for social, environmental, and economic justice both at The Stand and in the community. Last week, two of our members had their work in the news:
Shane Partridge, along with the rest of the staff and members at STR8-UP, hosted the Provincial Gang Strategy Forum. People form 80 organizations and government agencies joined the STR8-UP members and staff to identify solutions to gangs. Check out this article from CBC or this video from CTV. This powerful music video by STR8-UP members Jorgina Sunn and Shane Taysup was also debuted at the forum.
Jack Hicks, has been working with the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations to create the Saskatchewan First Nations Suicide Prevention Strategy. The strategy was released and approved last week. Read more here.

Food Not Bombs is back!
Food Not Bombs Saskatoon had their first meal on June 2! They’ve been reaching out to different grocery stores, small local farmers, and restaurants to solicit food donations that would otherwise go to waste. They are planning a consensus workshop in the coming weeks, and are hoping to get on a regular cooking/serving schedule in the coming month or two.
The key principles of FNB are: 1) we serve vegan or vegetarian food; 2) we are non-violent; 3) each chapter is autonomous and operates via consensus decision making; and 4) we come from a place of solidarity and mutual aid, not charity. We are dedicated to social change.

SaskOil Revisited: Socializing & Decolonizing Saskatchewan’s Oil
3pm Sunday, June 3
Amigo’s Cantina (806 Dufferin Avenue, Saskatoon)
Could Saskatchewan resurrect the idea of a Crown-owned oil company to tackle the twin crises of climate change and ongoing colonialism?
University of Regina Geography professor Emily Eaton will speak to the research and ideas put forward in the article “Socializing and decolonizing Saskatchewan’s oil,” which she co-authored with Briarpatch publisher David Gray-Donald.
The venue, Amigos Cantina, is child-friendly and wheelchair accessible. The talk will take place in the side room down the hallway past the washrooms.

Would you rather see us investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency technology research and installation?
Climate Justice Saskatoon and the Council of Canadians Saskatoon chapter invite you to join us for a rally against the Kinder Morgan Bailout and Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Bring your voices for singing, and pots and pans and other percussion instruments to make a noise.

Rally to Support Saskatoon Libraries
5:30 – 6:30 pm Monday, June 4
Saskatoon City Hall (222 3rd Avenue North, Saskatoon)
We want to close the book on restructuring the SPL and re-instate laid off workers at previous salaries, find the books that have disappeared, re-establish much needed special areas such as history, music, and film studies. We want to end the actions of the CEO and Board that are aimed at a new library but with clerks (think Walmart). This is an important chance to show the Mayor and City Council that they need to step in and act before it’s too late.

The Stand Community Organizing Centre (615 Main Street, Saskatoon)
Two groups that often make use of the Stand are the Council of Canadians Saskatoon chapter, and Climate Justice Saskatoon. These two groups will be holding their June meetings on Wednesday June 13th. The Council of Canadians will meet at 6:00 PM, and Climate Justice Saskatoon will meet at 7:00 PM.
The Council of Canadians is a national organization that works on a variety of social justice, democracy and environmental issues. Climate Justice Saskatoon is a local group that focuses on working for meaningful action on climate change.
They hold their regular monthly meetings back to back on the same evening and often collaborate on some issues. If you are interested in learning more or possibly getting involved in either group, you are cordially welcome to attend a meeting.

Roundtable Discussion: Mapping Local Achievements with the SDGs
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations in 2015, are designed to guide local and global efforts to address major issues such as poverty, hunger, injustice, environmental destruction and climate change, for everyone, everywhere by 2030.
In order to work with this new framework, we are hosting a roundtable workshop to explore how the SDGs relate to the work of local groups and organizations, and how groups are already achieving these goals either locally or globally. The roundtable is part of a series of meetings and aims to make visible the amazing work already happening on the SDGs in Canada and to share this work provincially and nationally.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Advocates, staff, students, educators, volunteers, business leaders, policy-makers, service-providers, funders and entrepreneurs interested in: Anti-poverty | Community health | Ecosystem health | Gender equality | Homelessness solutions | Human rights | Peace and inter-cultural understanding | Renewable energy | Social enterprise | Sustainable business, communities and infrastructure | Sustainable food systems | Water quality and access

It’s the last Last Sunday of the season! Join SUM Theatre on June 24 for an artistic responses to the month’s top news stories and events.
Where? Meet at the North East corner of Broadway and 11th St. at 7:30pm.
Once you find us, we’ll take you to an top secret location for a free, one-hour performance experience. It’s as fresh as a show gets as our community’s playwrights, musicians and celebrity interviewees delve into some of that month’s top news stories and events.
“It’s theatre of the now,” says artistic director Joel Bernbaum. “Art is more relevant than it has ever been before. It has the power to take people down a new path of understanding the world around them. We believe these performances and the discussions they generate will build a better community.”

Generating Momentum – Activist Leadership Summer Camp
Generating Momentum is a 4-day, province-wide event held at Arlington Beach Camp, located at Last Mountain Lake, SK., with a focus on providing the practical skills, knowledge, education, and networking opportunities necessary to make a difference in your community. If you are 18 to 35 years of age and are passionate about social, global, and environmental justice, this camp is for you!
