What price do we pay for oppression?

racism ~~ classism ~~ hetero-sexism ~~ ableism

What does it do to our bodies, minds, hearts, and spirits?

What about our relationships and communities as a whole?
Can practicing mindfulness help us heal and create the changes we need at the self, social, and system levels?

We’ll explore all of this and more through movement, breath work, and discussion in an anti-oppressive, body-neutral, trauma-sensitive space.

Who should come:
~ Anyone feeling the effects of oppression/related traumas and looking for ways to deal and heal
~ Caregivers & counsellors helping people deal with the effects of oppression and related traumas
~ Activists working to address the causes of oppression and wanting to up their self care
~ Yoga enthusiasts interested in activism and/or critical analysis of oppression and cultural appropriation in westernized yoga

Turning the Tide presents…

7pm – 9pm, Thursday, November 15

Amigos Cantina (back room)

Join long-time community organizer Don Kossick for the launch of his book “Images for Change.”

The event will feature a slide show and discussion of protest poster art from over 40 years.

About the book:

Images for Change is a tribute to the creativity and passion of activists over four decades. The images convey, with power and beauty, messages of internationalism, peace, Indigenous rights, women’s rates, environmentalism and justice.

The posters are from my collection and from friends’ collections. Thank you to the many who contributed posters, t-shirts, buttons, photos, and paintings all conveying the message of social justice. We gathered the material from individuals, organizations, archives and even off the walls and poles were the posters had been hanging for many years. We have also included some photo images illustrating important events and ideas. The collection forms a living history of people and communities calling for a much better and just world. Some of the material formed the basis of an exhibit that toured Saskatchewan communities in 2016 and is also displayed on the website artpostersforchange.ca.

Admission: free – public welcome – wheelchair accessible.

The Stand Community Organizing Centre & Food Not Bombs Saskatoon present…

A Consensus Decision Making Workshop

Consensus-Decision-Making-Workshop-Social-Media.jpg

1:00 – 5:00 pm Sunday, November 25

The Stand Community Organizing Centre

Many of us experience very little control over our lives in the wider world, with decisions being made for us by bosses, politicians, and corporate powers. This system promises rewards that are mostly about mobility within the hierarchy: getting a promotion, buying status by owning different stuff. And we’re encouraged to compete with each other and scapegoat whoever is beneath us in the pile, instead of questioning why there isn’t enough to go round in the first place.

Using consensus gives us a taste of how things could be done differently. It aims to dismantle all kind of hierarchy, and replace it with shared power. It is based on the values of equality, freedom, co-operation and respect for everyone’s needs.

Join us at The Stand for an interactive workshop on the consensus process for group decision making, and learn to radically democratize how you organize!

Sum Theatre presents…

The Last Sunday

Last Sunday of the month 733 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon
Back by popular demand!

On the last Sunday of every month Sum Theatre invites the public to join us at 733 Broadway Ave for a free, one-hour performance experience. It’s as fresh as a show gets as our community’s playwrights, musicians, ranters and celebrity interviewees delve into some of that month’s top news stories and events.

“It’s theatre of the now,” says artistic director Joel Bernbaum. “Art is more relevant than it has ever been before. It has the power to take people down a new path of understanding the world around them. We believe these performances and the discussions they generate will build a better community.”

How much? It’s free!

5 Ways to Help Keep The Stand growing…

  1. Become a member of the Treaty 6 Justice Collective, the nonprofit that manages The Stand.
  2. Check out The Stand’s Group Memberships for grassroots groups and organizations.
  3. Book The Stand for your next meeting or event. (Every booking helps us get a bit close to our vision of purchasing a community owned building to house justice seeking groups and organizations.)
  4. Like us on Facebook or Follow us on Twitter.
  5. Become a Stand Sustainer
Become_Monthly_Sustainer.jpg

We’ve been doing a lot with very little, but to keep the momentum going, we need to sign up $2200/month of monthly sustainer donations by the end of September.

We’re almost at half way there with just over 40 sustainer donors contributing between $10 – $50 each!

With $1200 more per month from roughly 50 people, we’ll reach our goal and be able to:

  1. Hire a coordinator for two days a week to keep The Stand growing.
  2. Remain independently funded so that we’re not beholden to the agendas of government and corporate funders.
  3. Replenish the Community Organizing Fund that supports grassroots organizing.

To become one of The Stand’s Sustainers, please click on this link and choose the option: “Become a Monthly Sustainer of The Stand.” Or just let us know by email: organize@thestandcentre.ca.

From everyone at The Stand, thank you for your continued interest and support for social, environmental, and economic justice.
